Iowa Democrats Double Managed Care Savings

May 12, 2015

From Carolina Partnership for Reform

Iowa Democrats and Republicans are fighting about Medicaid managed care savings estimates. And the Democrats believe reforming Medicaid with managed care will save over twice as much money as Republican Governor Terry Branstad says.

Branstad, who proposed bringing managed care companies in to run Medicaid, predicted $51 million in savings. Iowa Senate Democrats say the accurate number is $120 million. (KCRG)

Iowa Democrats and Republicans aren’t fighting about the need for Medicaid reform. They both agree managed care is the right reform. All they disagree on is how big the savings will be and that’s a pretty high class problem to have.

North Carolina Legislators who want to raise teacher pay should look at Iowa. There’s room to save in Medicaid to fund other priorities. And managed care is the right choice.
